#InspiringInclusion with Michelle Tseng, Radiation Oncologist for Women

An International Women's Day 2024 Special | #InspiringInclusion: Women in Leadership

As we celebrate International Women's Day this week, we are honoured to highlight three remarkable ladies in our midst who are not only valued customers at Nodspark, but respected leaders in their own fields.

We sincerely hope that with each of the lady's shared experiences navigating the complexities at work, that they will serve as a beacon of inspiration for all women out there to pursue their aspirations with confidence.

1. Could you give an introduction of who you are and what you do for work?

Hello, I'm Michelle Tseng. I am a Radiation Oncologist. I specialise in giving radiotherapy for women's cancers such as breast and gynaecological cancers.

 2. Can you share a moment in your life or career where being a woman presented challenges, and how did you overcome them?

When I was training to become a specialist, I had started my family too. So there was a point when I was working full time, raising two young children (2 and 4 years old at the time) and had to study for my specialist exit examinations all at the same time.

(As a mother of two children, Michelle is passionate about women's health and specialize in women's and children's cancer)

It was difficult to juggle all three commitments and do each one to the best of my abilities. Thankfully, I have a supportive husband and family who help me with my children so that I have time to work and study. I had to be very strict with my time management and it meant I had no time to really relax or chill out and there was certainly no luxury of "me time". I am a Christian and trusted that God would give me the strength and perseverance to get through this trying time.

3. What advice would you give to young women who aspire to pursue their dreams, but have barriers to navigate through and break in a traditionally male-dominated field?

Surround yourself with individuals who uplift you and cheer you on. There is no need to see men as the "enemy". I had very supportive male colleagues and bosses in the workplace who encouraged me to keep going and believed that I could achieve what I wanted to.

4. As a woman in your position, what other initiatives do you hope to carry out that could have a positive impact on uplifting women at the workspace?

I would hope to provide a safe space for women to voice their struggles honestly and not be judged for it or thought less of. Just because we struggle, does not mean that we are not able to achieve what we want. But just being heard and understood, helps a great deal in our mental health and gives us the motivation to keep going.
